Public Art Program Manager:  Arts Huntsville, the local arts agency serving the City of Huntsville, AL, seeks a Public Art Program Manager to support the community’s growing public art initiatives and continued implementation of the Huntsville Public Art Master Plan. The Public Art Program Manager works under direct supervision of the Public Art Program Director and general supervision of the Arts Huntsville Executive Director. The Manager will oversee a portfolio of select public art projects from inception to completion and will perform other duties as assigned in service to the Public Art Program. This role involves managing project timelines, budgets, and artist relations while fostering strong community engagement.

Key Job Duties

  • Project Management: Under the supervision of the Public Art Program Director, oversee a designated portfolio of public art projects, including project planning, coordination with stakeholders, artist selection, budget management, coordination with artists throughout the design, construction, fabrication, and installation phases of a project, and project tracking to ensure contracted projects are completed and installed on time and within budget.
  • Budget Management: Manage artist and vendor contracts for assigned public art projects and monitor contract compliance.
  • Artist Relations: Build and maintain strong relationships with artists, coordinate professional learning opportunities in public art for area artists, facilitate artist selection panels, and coordinate artist contracting process in collaboration with the Public Art Program Director.
  • Collection Management: Monitor the condition of public art pieces, conduct regular site visits, coordinate maintenance and signage needs, and edit and update artwork records on Arts Huntsville’s collection management system.
  • Community Engagement: Assist in developing and implementing community engagement strategies for public art projects. Contribute to public outreach efforts, gather feedback, and support the management of the Public Art Blog, social media channels, and public art tours. Help plan and coordinate public art events and dedications.
  • Public Art Committee Coordination: Coordinate meetings, activities, and minutes of the Huntsville Public Art Committee.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with a major in art, art history, architecture, arts administration, urban planning, construction/project management, or other closely related field.
  • Two or more years of progressively responsible experience in public art, architecture or construction management, urban planning, community-based arts programming, event management or arts education.
  • Experience managing public art projects, public art policy and/or design and construction related project management preferred.
  • Ability to foster and maintain relations with artists, staff, board and committee members, city officials, partners, community members and developers.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication ability, both written and verbal.
  • High attention to detail and strong organizational skills essential.
  • Ability to analyze budgetary information and statistical and technical data.
  • Knowledge of artistic disciplines/media, visual art, and public art trends.
  • Experience in MS Office Suite and Google platforms and experience/interest in new technologies, programs, and software.
  • Previous database or collections management experience preferred.
  • Experience with IT troubleshooting helpful.
  • Flexibility, teamwork, and positive, “can‐do” attitude essential; high degree of initiative required. 

Employment Status: Full-Time Exempt Position

Starting Annual Salary:  $58,000 – $66,000 annually DOE, plus competitive benefits package including health insurance, retirement plan and generous paid leave.

 Working Conditions:

Physical Demands – Sedentary to moderate physical work depending upon assignment; may require ability to lift up to 40 pounds; may require lifting and carrying objects, regular standing, and walking; may require bending, stooping, pushing, pulling and climbing; eye/hand coordination for operation of computer and stage/light/sound equipment; may require eye/hand/foot coordination for operation of motor vehicle; vision to read reports and other written material; form/spatial/visual aptitude to inspect items for proper length, width, shape, color, and saturation; frequent speech and hearing to maintain communication with colleagues and constituents; interpersonal temperament to perform under stress when confronted with an emergent situation.

Work Environment – Works in both indoor and outdoor environments.

Equipment Used – Standard and specialty business and professional equipment and tools, including computers, hand tools and stage, light, sound, and video equipment.
