Geode
Geode by Skip Van Houten, UAHuntsville Salmon Library
In March 2008, UAHuntsville became home to Geode, a five-ton sculpture crafted by Mississippi-artist Skip Van Houten. Originally commissioned by The Arts Council in 1989 to launch an Art in Public Places program for Huntsville, Geode could be seen in Big Spring International Park until park renovations began in 1995. After several years in storage, The Arts Council collaborated with UAHuntsville in 2008 to find a new location for the sculpture at UAHuntsville’s Salmon Library.
