LIT: Light + Innovation + Technology Returns to Downtown Square Saturday, August 27th

Huntsville, AL – Arts Huntsville and Downtown Huntsville, Inc. will once again bring digital art projections, colorful light and environmental design to the Downtown Huntsville Square at the third annual LIT: Light + Innovation + Technology festival, sponsored by Curse, Inc. On Saturday, August 27th from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m., four teams will transform all sides of the Downtown Square into a living work of art. From 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., attendees are invited to play with light at the inaugural DayLIT.

lit posterThe four finalists will create dynamic artwork on the square and compete for cash prizes. This year’s finalists are Kenny Paone, Rachel Marrero, LED Orange and the University of Alabama Huntsville. The first place team will receive $2500 with $1000 for second place and $500 for both third and fourth place. Attendees will enjoy lights moving to music, 3D mapped content along with interactive video and light. Videos, LEDs, music and computer-generated art will surround the square with color and sound. Streets on all four sides of the square will be closed to allow festivalgoers the chance to truly immerse themselves in the light experience.

“This juried festival celebrates the uniqueness of Huntsville through the fusion of light, innovation and technology while embodying the principles of STEAM education,” said Allison Dillon-Jauken, executive director of Arts Huntsville. “We are delighted to once again partner with Downtown Huntsville, Inc. to celebrate the creative side of our community.”

This year, Arts Huntsville and Downtown Huntsville, Inc. are excited to announce a new element to the event, called DayLIT. This pre-LIT event will feature glow in the dark chalk and screen printing, light throwies, green power cars, telescopes, UV bead/electromagnetic spectrum activity and a Mars walk app.

“It will be a free, kid-centric event where children of all ages can enjoy light-themed games and activities thanks to our partners at Lockheed Martin,” said Chad Emerson, CEO of Downtown Huntsville, Inc. “Then as the sun sets, DayLIT will evolve into LIT as we light the night on the Downtown Square.”

In addition to restaurants on the square, food trucks will also be on hand to provide tasty treats for hungry festivalgoers.  Fire & SpicePearl: Asian CuisineRollin Lobstah, Aww Shucks, Highway Kabobery Food TruckSugar Belle and Hindsight Coffee Co. will be located just off the square on Green Street.

Daniel, Jahni Moore, Logan Tanner, Christina Wegman and Andy Winn, whose thematically diverse murals can be found around the Huntsville metropolitan region.

At the opening, the featured artists collaborated live on three paintings, titled Underwater Moonlight 1, 2 and 3. The public can bid on the three paintings now through October 28, 2016, at the Arts Huntsville office in the Von Braun Center. All funds raised will support Lowe Mill ARTS & Entertainment’s efforts to build an outdoor classroom and artist workspace.

Arts Huntsville also unveiled the first-ever Huntsville Mural Map at the reception. Arts Huntsville commissioned local artist David Nuttall of Artimaps to create the map to lead local residents and visitors to view murals around the Huntsville metropolitan region.

Arts Huntsville to Unveil Huntsville Mural Map at Walls to Walls Gallery Opening Reception

Huntsville, AL – Arts Huntsville is proud to announce the opening of Walls to Walls: The Canvas Work of Huntsville Mural Artists gallery show and the unveiling of the Huntsville Mural Map on Saturday, August 6th. The gallery’s opening reception will be held at Lowe Mill ARTS & Entertainment on Saturday, August 6th from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the First Floor Connector. The featured artists will collaborate on three paintings LIVE at the event. The finished pieces will be auctioned off in a silent auction, with bidding beginning at the event that evening. The public can continue to bid on the pieces throughout the duration of the exhibit at the Arts Huntsville office in the Von Braun Center. All funds raised will support Lowe Mill ARTS & Entertainment’s efforts to build an outdoor classroom and artist workspace.

This event is more than a 5K – it’s a big party! At the start line there will be a pre-race party with music, dancing, warmups and giveaways and at the finish line there is a post-race party with timed color throws, music, dancing and even more giveaways.

If you’re ready to join us to volunteer or to be in The Color Run, there are a few tips for making your time even more colorful.

What to Wear:
The best thing to wear is WHITE.  Many runners get creative and wear tutus and other fun costumes. As long as you’re wearing mostly white, you will be all set.  The color does mostly wash out after the event, but be sure to wear something that you’re OK with getting full of color. If you’d like to KEEP all of the color you capture, spray it with vinegar and iron it before washing.

What to bring:
The first thing to bring is a fun attitude and be ready for a colorful party!! You can also bring spectators to watch the race and be a part of the post-race party. Other than that, be sure to have a towel to sit on in the car on the way home, just in case you have some powder left on you.  There is an air blown cleaning machine at the finish line that should help you get A lot of runners bring glasses, goggles or bandanas for over their eyes and mouths when running through the color stations. The color used at The Color Run is a non-toxic combination of cornstarch, baking soda and FD&C dyes.   If you bring a camera you should cover it with plastic wrap or put it in a plastic bag.

 

LIMITS AND RESTRICTIONS?:

There is no age limit for younger participants. Strollers are welcome at The Color Run, too. Children 6 and over must be registered with a race bib. Children under 6 do not need to register to race and may participate for FREE, however, they will not receive a goody bag. There will be Color Run items and shirts for sale at the event for them. If you’d like your child under 6 to have a race goody bag, then you should register them for the race.

Artist Announced for The Avenue Public Art Commission that will Serve as a Gateway to Downtown Huntsville

Huntsville, AL – Arts Huntsville, Sealy Property Development, LLC, and the City of Huntsville announced the commission of a public art installation that will serve as a gateway to Downtown Huntsville. The pieces, Light Tree and Light Arch, will be prominently featured in the plaza of The Avenue, a mixed-use development along Jefferson Street North and at the southwest corner of Jefferson and Meridian Streets.

Sealy Property Development, LLC approached Arts Huntsville about partnering on a public art commission after participating in open forums as part of the City’s public art master planning process facilitated by Arts Huntsville. Arts Huntsville, Sealy Property Development, LLC, and the City of Huntsville then combined forces on this public-private partnership. A request for artist qualifications for The Avenue commission was issued in December of 2014. After receiving and reviewing more than 30 artist qualifications and subsequent proposals, a panel of community members selected sculpture artist Christopher Fennell’s rendering of a “light tree” as the winning proposal in June of 2015.

Chris was tasked with creating a sculpture that will serve as a welcoming gateway to downtown Huntsville with a presence both day and night. Chris is an award-winning artist whose work has been commissioned by public art programs across the United States. His creative inspiration comes from a dual background in mechanical engineering and art. Many of Chris’ pieces represent his vision as an artist as well as his sense of humor, and encourage people to participate and place themselves inside or around the artwork. The placement of each of his sculptures is carefully selected for the maximum effect of discovery and scale.

“Chris presented incredible energy and enthusiasm in his vision for these pieces.  It is exciting to be working with an artist that is so accomplished and nationally known, yet is from Alabama and has strong ties to Huntsville,” said developer Charlie Sealy. “Works created by Chris have been installed in dynamic and progressive cities around the country, but you can tell that this Huntsville commission is special to him.”

Chris will also utilize train rails found on The Avenue site for the sculpture. “We are excited that the repurposing of the train rails will incorporate history from the site into the sculpture, giving it further meaning by merging the past with the present and future,” added developer Sasha Sealy.

Funding for the project comes from the City, Sealy Property Development, LLC and a 2012 Our Town grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to Arts Huntsville that provided funding for both the development of the City’s Public Art Master Plan and seed money for this initial public art pilot project. The artist was chosen by a twelve person selection committee that combined local arts officials, members of the downtown community and the project partners.

“Public art enlivens our community and creates a distinct cultural landscape for our neighborhoods, our city and our region. We are so grateful to the Sealys and the City of Huntsville for partnering with us on this project that will serve as a bold new gateway piece for downtown and a signature piece of public art for Huntsville,” said Allison Dillon-Jauken, Arts Huntsville executive director.

Chris’s Light Tree is as diverse as the community that will experience it, symbolizing an enlightened city – a place where diverse groups of people live and work together and exchange ideas. Light Arch represents different groups coming together to learn from one another, with the lights intertwining around the center of the arch. These site-specific pieces feature street lights you can find throughout Huntsville’s neighborhoods, with the Light Arch mirroring the Roman arch over St. Mary of the Visitation Catholic Church across Jefferson Street.

“A robust public art program is a key element of quality of life.  It helps create the unique and vibrant places where people want to live, and where businesses want to invest,” said Dennis Madsen, director of long-range planning for the City of Huntsville. “I’m tremendously excited about the Public Art Master Plan, and this installation in particular. I can’t say enough good things about Arts Huntsville and the Sealys, and their willingness to be a part of what I believe will be a precedent-setting project for Huntsville.”

The Avenue development will combine 197 loft apartments with 21,000 square feet of restaurant and retail space, creating a walkable, modern living environment. The development, located at 201 Jefferson Street, is scheduled to open in late summer 2016.  Installation of the sculpture is planned for September 2016.

Request for Qualifications: Large-Scale Indoor Artwork Commission at New Kroger in Madison

HUNTSVILLE, AL – Arts Huntsville and the Kroger Company announce a request for qualifications from interested artists for a large-scale indoor artwork to be located at the soon-to-be completed Kroger Grocery Store #605 at 4579 Wall Triana Highway in Madison. This 16’w x 5’h artwork will have high visibility and will be prominently displayed within the store. The artwork should engage the local community while referencing the area’s history and culture.

The deadline for qualifications to be received is Tuesday, July 5, 2016.
The call for entries is open to all artists 18 years and older residing in the greater Huntsville metropolitan region.

Finalists will be chosen based on work samples, experience and their connection to the Madison County community. Finalists will then be asked to submit a proposal addressing the installation requirements. Of the finalists submitting proposals, one will be selected to create the artwork for the new Wall Triana Kroger in Madison, opening September 2016.

The deadline for selected finalists to submit their proposals is July 22, 2016.

Selected finalists will receive $250 for their completed proposal. Payment to the selected artist is $9500 including all materials.

There is no application fee. To be considered, artists should submit three samples of their work (including title, medium, and dimensions), a brief resume and an explanation of their connection to the community to jsavanapridi@artshuntsville.org by 5:00 pm, Tuesday, July 5, 2016.

Arts Huntsville and DHI Accepting Proposals for LIT: Light + Innovation + Technology

Huntsville, AL – Arts Huntsville and Downtown Huntsville Inc. invite artists, lighting professionals, game designers, event producers, environmental design specialists, and makers of all backgrounds to submit proposals for the third annual LIT: Light + Innovation + Technology. This light and projection arts festival drew more than 3,000 attendees in its inaugural year and the event is poised to grow even more in its third return to the Downtown Huntsville Square on August 27, 2016.

For one night annually, digital art projections, colorful light and environmental designs transform all four sides of the Downtown Square into a living work of art. This juried festival celebrates the uniqueness of Huntsville through the fusion of light, innovation and technology.

On August 27, 2016 four artistic teams will showcase their projects and compete for the festival’s cash prizes. The selected artists will draw for the side of the square they will illuminate for the event; the four artistic teams selected through the RFP process will receive a cash prize following the event, with prizes awarded as follows: 1st place, $2500; 2nd place, $1000; 3rd place, $500 and 4th place, $500.

SCOPE OF WORK

We are looking for artists or artistic teams to submit a proposal describing the digital art installation, light installation or other illuminated environmental design they will create for one side of the square on August 27, 2016. We want to see how you will use downtown Huntsville as a canvas for color, light and more.

Artists/artistic teams won’t know until they are chosen which side of the square will act as their canvas, therefore submissions should be adaptable to any side. (Artists/artistic teams will be assigned their installation area thru random drawing following the jury process. The previous winner will be able to select their side.) Content submitted should be acceptable for audiences of all ages. Artists will be responsible for providing their own equipment and for projecting their work from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. on August 27, 2016. Artists must provide electrical needs and note if additional test time is needed. Set-up will begin at noon on August 26, 2016. All reasonable accommodations will be made for the selected artistic teams.

RFP Procedures

All submissions received by June 30, 2016 will be reviewed anonymously by a jury. Submissions after the deadline will not be accepted. Artists will be notified via email of selection status by July 15, 2016. Testing will take place on August 26 from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. On August 27, set-up will begin at noon. All artists/artistic teams must be completely installed at ready to go live at 5:30 p.m. on August 27, 2016. Cash prizes will be awarded within two weeks following the event.

There is no application fee and artists retain complete ownership of their works. Please note that in submitting an entry, you agree to allow Arts Huntsville, Downtown Huntsville Inc. and/or its sponsoring partners and local media unrestricted use of your artwork (in part or in whole) for promotional purposes.

Selected artists/artistic teams will be notified of their installation area on the Square (North/South/East/West) after the jury process is complete. Each artist/artistic team will be assigned a number and the selection committee will draw numbers to assign installation areas.

Please note: Entries may include new or existing short digital videos or entirely new interactive work. Audio may be included as long as artist provides equipment. If audio is to be part of the proposal it must be submitted with the entry.

  • Project Description detailing your planned digital projection, lighting installation or other illuminated environmental design encompassing one side of Huntsville’s downtown square.
  • Type of work

o   Video files of past work may be submitted by email to amayfield@artshuntsville.org. Videos may also be uploaded to vimeo.com or YouTube with links emailed to the below address.

  • Equipment planned for installation
  • Power requirements and any special installation requirements (Testing will be available August 26, 2016 from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Equipment may not remain on the square overnight.)
  • Brief bio of artist or creative team

Arts Huntsville Joins National Arts & Economic Impact Study

 

Americans for the Arts

The Arts Mean Business. That is the message Arts Huntsville is delivering as we join the Arts & Economic Prosperity 5, a national study measuring the economic impact of nonprofit arts and culture organizations and their audiences. The research study is being conducted by Americans for the Arts, the nation’s nonprofit organization advancing the arts and arts education. It is the fifth study over the past 20 years to measure the impact of arts spending on local jobs, income paid to local residents, and revenue generated to local and state governments.

As one of nearly 300 study partners across all 50 states plus the District of Columbia, Arts Huntsville is representing not only Huntsville/Madison County in this effort, but is the only study partner representing the arts and cultural sector across the state of Alabama. Arts Huntsville will collect detailed financial data about our local nonprofit arts and culture organizations such as our theater and dance companies, museums, festivals, and arts education organizations. “We benefit from a vibrant and growing arts, entertainment and cultural scene across the Huntsville metro region. Many people don’t think of nonprofit arts organizations as business, but this study will make clear that the arts are a formidable industry in our community – employing people locally, purchasing goods and services from local merchants, and helping to drive tourism and economic development.”

Arts Huntsville will also collect surveys from attendees at arts events using a short, anonymous questionnaire that asks how much money they spent on items such as meals, parking and transportation, and retail shopping specifically as a result of attending the event. Previous studies have shown that nationally the average attendee spends $24.60 per person, per event, beyond the cost of admission. Those studies have also shown that, on average, 32% of arts attendees travel from outside the county in which the arts event took place, and that those cultural tourists typically spend nearly $40 per person – generating important revenue for local businesses and demonstrating how the arts drive revenue for other businesses in the community.

Surveys will be collected throughout calendar year 2016. The results of the study will be released in June of 2017.

“This study will show that when we support the arts in the Huntsville metropolitan area, we are making an investment in an industry, one that supports jobs and generates government revenue, and is the cornerstone of tourism,” said Dillon-Jauken.

According to Americans for the Arts’ most recent national study, the nonprofit arts industry generated $135.2 billion in total economic activity and supported 4.1 million full-time equivalent jobs during 2010, resulting in $22.3 billion in federal, state and local government revenues. The $135.2 billion total included $61.1 billion in spending by arts organizations and $74.1 billion in event-related spending by their audiences on items such as meals, local transportation and overnight lodging.
