Land Trust of North Alabama, Alabama’s first land trust, is the only local organization dedicated to preserving North Alabama’s great natural places,  fresh water resources, and wildlife habitat.  Properties that are not open to the public often protect endangered species.  We help connect people with nature and have created Nature Preserves.

The Monte Sano Nature Preserve is our flagship Preserve and is the green backdrop for the city of Huntsville. It is one of the largest urban nature preserves in the US! Three of our Preserves are each larger than Central Park and are all within Huntsville city limits.  The trail systems of four of our Preserves (Monte Sano, Blevins Gap, Wade Mountain, and Harvest Square Preserves) are the first in Madison County to be honored as National Recreation Trails by the US Department of the Interior.

Enjoy award winning environmental education!  *“Tuesdays on the Trail” summer programs are free (except where noted) and help encourage the next generation of land stewards. *Our spring and fall guided hike series offer many opportunities to see waterfalls, wildflowers, birds, and forests on our protected properties. *Special events include “Concerts at Three Caves” (summer); the ever-popular Moon Over Three Caves Dance (third Saturday in September); and the Haunt at Three Caves (October). These events allow attendees to enjoy the cool ambiance of this spectacular former limestone quarry while supporting the work of the Land Trust.

Volunteer opportunities include outreach programming, event assistance, and property/trail maintenance. Our “Trail Care Partner” program is perfect for companies and groups interested in team building and mild exercise.  The Land Trust values partnerships. Members, sponsors, and donors are vital to the success of our preservation mission. We manage trails and properties for the cities of Madison and Huntsville, as well as the Nature Conservancy in Alabama and Alabama’s Forever Wild.

Environmental groups, art organizations, businesses, and media resources are also key to the high quality of life in our communities.  Want to preserve your beloved family farm or acres? Know of an historic property that you’d like to protect? Give the Land Trust a call to discuss ways to reach your land preservation goals.  The Land Trust has been called “the Other Space Program” and an original “green” group. Our trails and Nature Preserves are open dawn to dusk for all ages to explore and enjoy.
